"Why Practice Respect"
Without respect for rules, we would have confusion. People would treat each other rudely and violate each other's privacy and other rights. Respect helps people to feel valued. Self-respect is making sure no one hurts you or abuses you, even an elder. When you respect yourself, others respect you too.

IWK - Walk for Health/ Pajama Day
It's time for the 4th Annual Kids - Helping- Kids Walk for Health at Glen Stewarts School! Nate, from Mrs. Doucette class, started raising money for the IWK while he was in kindergarten. He knows very well how important the IWK is to the lives of children and families throughout the Maritimes. The Walk for Health was Nate's idea back in grade 1. While the students walk, which contributes to their own health, they also have the opportunity through their donations to contribute to the health of many other Maritime children.
Everyone who donates $2 or more between Pajama Day (Friday, May 14th) and the Walk (Monday, May 17th) will have their name entered in a draw for the weekend for two at Dalvay By The Sea which includes 2 nights in the Antique guest room and full breakfast daily. The draw will be held on June 6. The IWK telethon is held June 5 & 6. Everyone is welcome to come out to the fun day at Confederation Landing Park on Sunday, June6.
"I hope we can get lots of money for the kids in the IWK. The school (Glen Stewart) has been great to help the kids in the past four years. I hope we can do it again this year."

The Easter Seals Ambassador, Colton Matheson, was here this morning to visit the students at Glen Stewart. We were able to present him with a cheque for $2500.00 from the students and staff. We would like to thank the parents, students and staff for all their hard work in the fundraising efforts.
Green Week: Students from Mrs Hambly's class read:
This week let's remember to turn off the lights when we are leaving the room for more than 5 min. Why not harness the power of the sun? Open those blinds and brighten up the room without turning on the lights. At home, ask your families about using energy efficient light bulbs. They last longer and use a lot less energy!
All week we will be collecting old batteries in the front lobby. Bring in your worn out batteries from home and we will make sure that they are recycled properly.
Grade 5 students will be cleaning up our playground this week. Litter is wasteful and many littered items could be reused or recycled. Did you know that it can take a piece of styrofoam or a plastic jug up to one million years to biodegrade? Prince Edward Island is one of the most beautiful places to live. Let's keep it that way!

Green Week
The week of April 19-23 is Green Week at Glen Stewart School.
There are several events planned to encourage staff and students to "be green". They are:
Brown Out:
For the entire day take action to reduce your carbon footprint within your classroom.
- Turn on only one set of lights for the entire day.
- Keep computers on only when necessary.
- Ovoid using the overhead projector and photocopier.
- Print half as many worksheets, students could share and write answers on scrap paper.
- Use flipchart paper twice.
Outdoor Classroom:
To promote an appreciation for the great outdoors take a lesson outside. Get creative there’s many curricular connections around every corner!
Batteries to School:
Encourage students to take their old batteries to school so that they can be properly disposed of. We will have a drop off bin in the lobby!
Earth Day Earth Hour:
To celebrate Earth Day we will have our very own Earth Hour. You choose the hour and plan to use zero electricity. Maybe during the hour do an activity with an environmental focus.
Recycled Art:
Throughout the week encourage children to bring in random previously used materials that can be used to create art during our school-wide art blitz.
Here are some websites with recycled art project ideas. Lots of different ideas using common household items.
http://www.make-stuff.com/recycling/
http://www.allfreecrafts.com/recycling-crafts/index.shtml
http://crafts.kaboose.com/holidays/earth-day/earth_day_crafts.html
Freecycle Option
Host a freecycle flea market in your classroom. Students bring in old unwanted toys etc. and have a free exchange of items.
Glen Stewart is also promoting Litterless lunches for the week. Litterless lunches are a great way to cut down on the amount of garbage our school creates daily. Here are some tips to create your own litterless lunch:
-take a reusable lunch kit
-pack sandwiches and snacks in reusable containers
-take whole fruits that can be composted
-use a thermos or beverage container rather than a drinking box
-use a cloth napkin rather than a disposable one

Positive Parenting from Two Homes
The Positive Parenting from Two Homes (Children's program) is a program that is offered to schools and provides an opportunity for children to talk to other children experiencing the impact of parental conflict and transitions from one home to another as a result of parental separation. This program is available to our school if enough interest exists. This cost-free children's program is presented over four or five sessions (one hour in duration during school time) by trained facilitators. Age-related activities and discussions will be provided along with children having the chance to talk to other children their own age that are going through similar situations. The program is not counselling, but an opportunity for children to share their experiences and to hear helpful information with the guidance of trained facilitators. The age group/grade level for this program will be determined from parental response in that it will be offered where the most interest is shown. ESD Re-Zoning Process
Charlottetown - The Eastern School District feels it is important that our school communities are properly informed regarding the District re-zoning process. The following describes what we have done so far and what we hope to accomplish.
Requests for school boundary changes must be submitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees by October 15. Six requests were received this year. A re-zoning committee was established in late October. These individuals were asked to study the requests and recommend to the full Board which should be implemented.
The re-zoning committee prepared recommendations for the December 17, 2009 Board meeting. The recommendations were removed from the agenda. On January 6, 2010, a second attempt was made to present the committee's recommendations; however, the meeting was rescheduled due to space limitations. It will now be held this Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Colonel Gray High School at 7 p.m. At that time, the re-zoning committee will recommend to the Board the schools that are to be re-zoned for the coming year. No options or details will be provided as to how these schools might be re-zoned. As per Board Regulation, JCAA-R, there will be no public input at this time. The Board will simply decide which schools will be re-zoned.
On January 13, 2010, the Board will direct the re-zoning committee to complete and present a report to the Board outlining details and/or options as to how these schools might be re-zoned. This report must be presented before January 31, 2010. At this time, a six week public consultation process, as per Board Regulation JCAA-R, will begin. Public meetings will be advertised in the newspaper, on our website, and through our schools. The Board hopes to hear from as many affected parents and community members as possible before they make their final decision.
