Charlottetown - The Eastern School District feels it is important that our school communities are properly informed regarding the District re-zoning process. The following describes what we have done so far and what we hope to accomplish.
Requests for school boundary changes must be submitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees by October 15. Six requests were received this year. A re-zoning committee was established in late October. These individuals were asked to study the requests and recommend to the full Board which should be implemented.
The re-zoning committee prepared recommendations for the December 17, 2009 Board meeting. The recommendations were removed from the agenda. On January 6, 2010, a second attempt was made to present the committee's recommendations; however, the meeting was rescheduled due to space limitations. It will now be held this Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Colonel Gray High School at 7 p.m. At that time, the re-zoning committee will recommend to the Board the schools that are to be re-zoned for the coming year. No options or details will be provided as to how these schools might be re-zoned. As per Board Regulation, JCAA-R, there will be no public input at this time. The Board will simply decide which schools will be re-zoned.
On January 13, 2010, the Board will direct the re-zoning committee to complete and present a report to the Board outlining details and/or options as to how these schools might be re-zoned. This report must be presented before January 31, 2010. At this time, a six week public consultation process, as per Board Regulation JCAA-R, will begin. Public meetings will be advertised in the newspaper, on our website, and through our schools. The Board hopes to hear from as many affected parents and community members as possible before they make their final decision.
