Remember to: turn off the water when you brush your teeth, turn off the lights when you leave a room, sort your garbage, don't litter and walk or bike instead of drive.

Day 2

The Easter Seals Ambassador, Colton Matheson, was here this morning to visit the students at Glen Stewart. We were able to present him with a cheque for $2500.00 from the students and staff. We would like to thank the parents, students and staff for all their hard work in the fundraising efforts.

Green Week: Students from Mrs Hambly's class read:
This week let's remember to turn off the lights when we are leaving the room for more than 5 min. Why not harness the power of the sun? Open those blinds and brighten up the room without turning on the lights. At home, ask your families about using energy efficient light bulbs. They last longer and use a lot less energy!

All week we will be collecting old batteries in the front lobby. Bring in your worn out batteries from home and we will make sure that they are recycled properly.

Grade 5 students will be cleaning up our playground this week. Litter is wasteful and many littered items could be reused or recycled. Did you know that it can take a piece of styrofoam or a plastic jug up to one million years to biodegrade? Prince Edward Island is one of the most beautiful places to live. Let's keep it that way!

Happy Birthday (April 20)

Green Week

The week of April 19-23 is Green Week at Glen Stewart School.
There are several events planned to encourage staff and students to "be green". They are:
Brown Out:
For the entire day take action to reduce your carbon footprint within your classroom.
- Turn on only one set of lights for the entire day.
- Keep computers on only when necessary.
- Ovoid using the overhead projector and photocopier.
- Print half as many worksheets, students could share and write answers on scrap paper.
- Use flipchart paper twice.
Outdoor Classroom:
To promote an appreciation for the great outdoors take a lesson outside. Get creative there’s many curricular connections around every corner!
Batteries to School:
Encourage students to take their old batteries to school so that they can be properly disposed of. We will have a drop off bin in the lobby!
Earth Day Earth Hour:
To celebrate Earth Day we will have our very own Earth Hour. You choose the hour and plan to use zero electricity. Maybe during the hour do an activity with an environmental focus.
Recycled Art:
Throughout the week encourage children to bring in random previously used materials that can be used to create art during our school-wide art blitz.
Here are some websites with recycled art project ideas. Lots of different ideas using common household items.
http://www.make-stuff.com/recycling/

http://www.allfreecrafts.com/recycling-crafts/index.shtml

http://crafts.kaboose.com/holidays/earth-day/earth_day_crafts.html

Freecycle Option
Host a freecycle flea market in your classroom. Students bring in old unwanted toys etc. and have a free exchange of items.
Glen Stewart is also promoting Litterless lunches for the week. Litterless lunches are a great way to cut down on the amount of garbage our school creates daily. Here are some tips to create your own litterless lunch:
-take a reusable lunch kit
-pack sandwiches and snacks in reusable containers
-take whole fruits that can be composted
-use a thermos or beverage container rather than a drinking box
-use a cloth napkin rather than a disposable one
